PURE & NATURAL
In 2013 we set out to develop a complete line of body care products without using many of the harmful ingredients found in other traditional body care lines. In particular, we promised to Never Use:
- GMOs – Genetically Modified Organisms. Why mess with Mother Nature when there are great natural options?
- Parabens – Synthetic chemicals used as antimicrobial and antifungal preservatives but are known as hormone disruptors and have been found in the tissue of breast cancer tumors.
- PEGs – Polyethylene Glycol. Synthetic chemicals that function as surfactants, cleansing agents, emulsifiers, skin conditioners and humectants. PEGs are thought to potentially increase cancer risks.
- Petroleum – Derived from crude oil, used to manufacture plastic, fertilizer and pesticides. Disrupts the natural protective layers of our skin. This is not a sustainable ingredient.
- Phenoxyethanol – A synthetic chemical used commonly as a preservative system for body care products. An extremely hazardous substance that is an irritant to skin and eyes and is toxic to kidneys, the nervous system and liver.
- Phthalates – Synthetic chemicals commonly found in fragrances and hair care products. The EPA has put Phthalates on the list of chemicals that “may present a risk” to human health because they disrupt hormone activity.
- Propylene glycol – A synthetic solvent which is a strong skin irritant. It easily penetrates the skin and can weaken cellular structure. A common ingredient in antifreeze. Potential links to liver and kidney damage.
- Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate (SLS) – A synthetic detergent that can be drying and harsh for the skin and hair, causes eye irritation and is a suspected gastrointestinal and liver toxicant.
- Synthetic colors – Our colors come from plant extracts and natural minerals. We do not use synthetic food colorants or dyes commonly used in the industry.
- Synthetic fragrances – Our fragrances are derived from essential oils and essential oil blends as opposed to synthetic alternatives. While this has a cost impact, we believe the outcome is well worth it.
Over the past two years we have dedicated a substantial amount of effort to make every Éclair Naturals product free of any Genetically Modified Organisms. This has been difficult due to the amazing proliferation of Genetically Modified plant crops over the past 20 years. The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimated in 1994 that 94% of the planted area of soybean, 96% of cotton and 93% of corn were genetically modified varieties in the United States.
Many body care product ingredients are derived from corn and soy, two of the top genetically modified crops in the world. Although we do not need to worry about GMO soy since all of our products are soy free, we needed to source many corn derived ingredients from overseas to ensure that they were not genetically modified. We regularly audit and survey our ingredients suppliers and conduct occasional tests of ingredients and our final products to verify they are GMO free.
Éclair Naturals conducts regular testing of ingredients and our finished products using Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) testing. PCR testing is performed at the DNA level and therefore is highly accurate. It can detect all commercial GMOs, is effective with a wide range of sample types and can provide definitive quantification of GMOs. PCR is the standard GMO test method used in the industry worldwide to verify trade contracts and ensure regulatory compliance.
Over the years we have met many people that have a gluten intolerance, are trying to eliminate gluten from their diet or even have celiac disease. Gluten is a generic name for proteins found in wheat and related grains such as barley and rye. It is commonly used as a “glue” in food to hold things together such as breads, baked goods, pastas and cereals.
For people who have celiac disease, the smallest amount of gluten can make them seriously ill. Celiacs have discovered, unfortunately, that body care products containing gluten can trigger their symptoms, since whatever goes on your body goes in your body. While some have claimed that the gluten molecule is too large to be absorbed through skin pores, we have received testimonials from customers and others that gluten containing skin care products can trigger celiac symptoms.
All of our Éclair Naturals products, including those containing oats, are certified gluten free to less than 5 parts per million (the limitation of the testing equipment). To become certified, we send samples of our products to Celiac Support Association (www.csaceliacs.org), the largest non-profit celiac support group in America. CSA sends our samples to an independent testing lab, such as The University of Nebraska’s Food Allergy Research and Resource Program, which verifies that the samples do not contain gluten before issuing their certification.
We are proud to offer wonderful gluten free products for those people who are celiac, have a gluten intolerance or in general wish to eliminate gluten from their lifestyle.
Soy is one of the most genetically modified crops in the world. In 2014, the USDA estimated that 94% of the soybean planted area in the U.S. was a genetically modified variety. Almost 60% of processed foods have soy in their ingredients list and soy is a very common ingredient in medicines, cosmetics, lotions, creams and other personal care items.
According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, soy is among the most common foods that cause an allergic reaction. Unfortunately, reading labels is most often not enough in determining whether a product contains soy or not. The majority of skin care products today contain vitamin E that is derived from soy. It is one of the cheapest ways to extract vitamin E. This soy derived vitamin E can contain residual soy bean oil, but since the ingredient on the label is tocopherol, the technical name for vitamin E, the soy is not listed.
All Éclair Naturals products are soy free. We have worked hard to use only soy free ingredients and are happy to report that our vitamin E is derived from sunflower seeds as opposed to soy.
Éclair Naturals is certified cruelty-free by the Leaping Bunny which is a program run by the Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics (CCIC). Products bearing the Leaping Bunny symbol are certified “cruelty-free” under the internationally recognized Humane Cosmetics or Humane Household Products Standards. These rigorous standards stipulate that no animal testing is conducted or commissioned for finished products or ingredients in any phase of product development by the company, its laboratories or its suppliers after a fixed cut-off date.
As a result, our cruelty-free certification means that we, as a company are bound to never test the final products on animals, nor use ingredients that have been tested on animals. We require all our suppliers to certify that the ingredients/raw materials they provide to us have not been tested on animals with a zero tolerance policy.
In addition, our company policy is to not sell products to any countries that require imported personal care products be tested on animals. We refuse to sell our products in those countries until their laws on animal testing change. We are happy and proud to stand by our position, as our belief in cruelty-free products and a cruelty-free world is one of our core values.
Consistent with our Cruelty Free beliefs, the entire Éclair Naturals line does not contain any animal derived ingredients or by products. For example, one ingredient common to many body care products is beeswax. We do not use beeswax in any of our products since it is considered an animal by product and exploitative of bees.
Another example is carmine, which is a common red pigment used in personal care and food products. Carmine is produced from some scale insects by boiling insect bodies in ammonia and adding alum to the carminic acid. Lanolin is another common animal product used in the personal care industry.
Lanolin, commonly known as wool wax or wool grease, is secreted from the glands of wool bearing animals.

And, just to reassure you, our glycerin for our glycerin based soaps comes from vegetable oil.
Our mission at Éclair Naturals is to create great natural products for great people. We partner with like-minded organizations to make the world a better place.
One of our core values is to strive for Zero Waste. Whenever we make bar soaps, fizzy bath cupcakes and other products, we have trimmings as part of the manufacturing process. Those trimmings are saved and ultimately remanufactured into what we call our “mutt soap” or “fizzy bath crumbs.” They are the same great products, but in a mixed form. For example, our mutt soap comes out in several different mash up scents and colors. It works great and always smells great, but you would not be able to place the exact scent or color.
Because these products are not commercially marketable, we donate them to wonderful organizations such as Convoy of Hope (www.convoyofhope.org) which will use them for disaster relief victims, homeless shelters and other community outreach programs. It is one of the ways we are able to give back to the community and help others.
Another great partner we support is The Gentle Barn (www.gentlebarn.org). They are an animal rescue non-profit that has been providing shelter and comfort to hundreds of neglected and abused animals since their inception. In return the animals provide comfort and compassion to visitors from all over the world. The Gentle Barn also has an At-Risk Youth program that uses interactions with animals to teach children how to behave towards other people. We are very proud to work with and support Ellie and Jay, two amazing people who are role models to us all.
MADE IN THE USA
We are very proud to be manufacturing all of our products ourselves in our kitchen bakery in the USA. We feel that this is absolutely critical to ensure compliance with Our Brand Promise, control the quality of our products and eliminate any potential for cross-contaminations. This also allows us to provide fair wage employment opportunities to the local community and build community awareness of the benefits of a natural lifestyle.
Having our own facility helps our business thrive as well. It allows us to quickly develop products and bring them to market and react to changes in consumer demands promptly. If you are in the area and would like to tour our facility, please send us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
